## Intro

Semrush and Ahrefs are the two suites every serious SEO team eventually evaluates against each other, and the answer is almost never "they're the same — pick the cheaper one". They overlap heavily on the headline features (keyword research, backlink analysis, site audit, rank tracking) but they're built for different jobs and they price for different buyers.

We ran the same workflows against `stripe.com`, `notion.so`, and `shopify.com` in both tools the same week in June 2026 — keyword discovery, link-gap analysis, on-demand site audit, position tracking setup, and a small content brief. The comparison table below captures what we actually saw. Below that, the pricing snapshot is the public vendor pricing on the test date; both vendors run discounts and bundle changes through the year, so always click through to the vendor page before you buy.

The honest short version: **pick Semrush if you live in PPC + local + SEO and need one tool for the whole department**; **pick Ahrefs if your day is keyword + content + backlinks and you want the cleanest dataset behind every screen**. Both are excellent; neither replaces a dedicated technical crawler like Screaming Frog or Sitebulb, and neither is good at converting prospect audits into leads (that's what we build).

## When not to use either

- **You're a solo founder spending less than $100/mo.** Both entry tiers are expensive. Look at Ubersuggest, Mangools, or the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools tier for your own sites.
- **You only need a technical crawl.** Both have site audit modules, but a dedicated crawler is faster, deeper, and cheaper for that single job.
- **You're an agency selling SEO and want to capture leads with white-label audits of prospects' sites.** Neither does this. That's why we built [LemAudit](https://lemaudit.com).
- **Your sole need is rank tracking.** SerpRobot, AccuRanker, or Wincher are cheaper and better at that one job.

## Verdict by use case

- **Agency selling full-funnel marketing** → Semrush. The PPC suite, listing management, and social tooling save you a stack of separate tools.
- **In-house SEO team at a content-led company** → Ahrefs. Content Explorer + cleaner UI + deeper link index pay for themselves.
- **Link builders** → Ahrefs. The link index is the product.
- **Local SEO agency** → Semrush. Listing Management + Map Rank Tracker exist; in Ahrefs, they don't.
- **Mostly-technical SEO** → Either, plus a dedicated crawler. Pick on PPC needs.

Honest disclosure: this page is published by LemAudit. We don't compete with Semrush or Ahrefs (we don't do keyword research or backlink data) and we have no affiliate relationship with either vendor as of the date stamped on this page. If you find a factual error, email us — we keep the changelog in git and re-test quarterly.

## FAQ

### Is Semrush actually cheaper than Ahrefs?

At entry tier, Ahrefs Lite ($129/mo) is slightly cheaper than Semrush Pro ($139.95/mo). At every tier above that, Semrush is cheaper for what you get if (and only if) you use the PPC, local, and social modules — otherwise you're paying for stuff you don't use.

### Which has the bigger backlink index in 2026?

Semrush states 43+ trillion backlinks, Ahrefs 35+ trillion (vendor self-reported as of 2026-06-30). In practice, both find the high-authority links that matter; index size is mostly a vanity number above a certain threshold. Crawl freshness is the more useful metric, and both are competitive there.

### What about Authority Score vs Domain Rating?

They measure roughly the same thing (link-based authority on a 0–100 scale) using different formulas. Neither is "right" — they're internal metrics, not Google's actual ranking signals. Use whichever your team is used to; don't switch tools just to chase a different score.

### Can I run both in parallel for a month to compare?

Yes — both offer 7-day trials (Semrush) or a 30-day money-back guarantee (Ahrefs). The trick is to define three concrete workflows you'll run in each tool on the same data and score them on outcome, not aesthetics. Most teams that "evaluate" both end up renewing whichever one their lead SEO learned first; that's fine.

### What about Moz, Mangools, SE Ranking?

Moz is the legacy player; cleaner UI, smaller index, cheaper entry tier — see our [Moz vs Semrush comparison](/compare/moz-vs-semrush). Mangools is an Ubersuggest-tier price with a friendlier UI. SE Ranking is a credible mid-market alternative at ~$65/mo entry. None match Ahrefs or Semrush on data depth, and most agencies that try them eventually upgrade.
